2011 Newfoundland Excursion

Thanks to Claire for willing to be my model for many of the underwater shots on the Bell Island shipwrecks!!

There are 4 wrecks at Bell Island, all iron-ore carriers that were sunk in 1942 by German U-Boat torpedoes. They rest upright on the bottom, and the deeper the wreck the more pristine the condition. Water temp is cold on these wrecks, and can be as low as 32F even in the summer months. Several thermoclines occur though on ascent from the dives, making the safety/deco stops feel toasty warm :)

South Dildo.. Whale Bones. The visibility was extremely good on this dive. The cunner were incredibly pesky! Several times while taking pics, I would feel one nibbling on my hood. They were also fascinated with the big dome on the camera. The sculpin are mostly blind, their eyes are covered in calcification. They sense movement though and followed us around like puppies!
