FeeBee 2
A second look at FeeBee. I use a sharpening filter, Focus Magic to get the ripping detail in his fur. Everyone should have a look at Focus Magic, best thing I have seen for pulling up details.

FeeBee
Our closest friends live near the White River. In their neighborhood there is a large whitetail deer population. This is the biggest buck, FeeBee. They have been following him since his birth a few years ago.

Crossed 1,000,000 Pageviews
My P-Base albums on September 1, 2014 crossed 1,000,000 page views since I set this up years ago. Thanks to all of you for your support and kind comments. We wildlife photographers feel like second-class citizens in the world of photography, well behind fashion and glamour photographers. My #1 album is Wild Arkansas Animals.

River Otter at Ponca Access, Buffalo National River
The pool just downstream from the Ponca Low Water Bridge is periodically visited by River Otther. This morning they were there at 9:30 AM CDT. 9:30 to 10:00 AM seems like the most likely time to catch them though they do feed all day long. I spot them by looking for ripples that seem unexplained. This picture is part of a family of 4 I have photographed since last year.

Armadillo, Head Up Pose
We have many armadillos around here. On this particular day I was on my belly near this guy hoping for this picture. I have many armadillo pictures, only this one of it looking at me. They seem oblivious to people unless they make a lot of noise.

Pileated Woodpecker Leaving Nest
The saga continues. Today it was another 1.5 hours and this time I got the shot. It is clear now that this woodpecker has little ones. I watched as she gathered bugs and returned to the nest a few times. I worked pretty hard to understand how to time her movements. This was the first success. I have hoped for this picture for years. All it took was 12 hours and 1250th of a second. All good things come to grinders. Now for the little ones.
15-MAY-2014
Pileated Woodpecker at Nest
This picture is the result of patience and luck. I have set on this nest 5 times for at least 10 hours total before I caught this bird outside the nest. Generally she would just look at me from the shadows, and when I relaxed momentarily, she would fly off and I came up empty. Today she flew away and came back. I take that to mean that the babies are now hatched. She seemed feed them, but I am only guessing.

Battle Stations
This is the pose, the look of a hummingbird ready to launch an attack. Note the fanned tail, posture and cock of the neck. The raised wing is not caught in mid beat, instead it is cocked making the hummer look much larger. You will see this pose often when another hummer flies very near.
04-MAY-2014
Peek_A_Boo
Odd picture of a female hummer watching me between the twigs.
02-MAY-2014
The Chase
Taken just a moment after the hovering female displaced the flying male hummingbird.
01-MAY-2014
The Moment of Attack
Nobody could time this. It shows the moment of attack just before the lower hummer bails out. This happens constantly. All one needs to do is focus on the perched bird, watch for gestures indicating incoming, and shoot about 2,000 frames for every good picture. This will test your patience, but it is worth it when you get one.
Locked and Loaded, Hummingbird Black and White
When getting ready to fight, tail flares are the standard move. I shot this one intentionally as a silhouette in direct backlighting without exposure compensation, that would be roughly +2 stops. Anyway, I like the effect, and I like to take it to black and white with the contrast kicked up, and a blue filter to improve the sky. Something different.

Sneak Attack
Flocks of hummingbirds buzz each other constantly when feeding. I got this picture mostly by accident, but focused in the middle of all the action. This male knows the attack is coming, note his flared tail.

Dueling Hummingbirds in a Dogwood Tree
My best hummingbird shot this year, maybe ever. The key is to shoot as soon as you see the tail feathers flare. In the next moments is when the action occurs, and you will never get the shot if you wait to shoot it. You will miss a lot, but some of these come along. The tail flare is the key to timing.

Cardinal in Wild Plum Tree
This little guy was watching me while I was doing a butterfly shoot. Somehow my autofocus nailed him through all the brush. He was eating whatever he could catch. Probably some of the same butterflies I was trying to shoot.

Trompeter Swan Touchdown II
An interesting feature of this picture is that there are surface ripples tracing the landing path of the swan back and to the left along his glide path. The are from the powerful turbulance of his wing flaps as he slowed down to land.

This killdeer is attempting to distract me from her young. The babies are very small and look like rocks. If you see this display walk around carefully, you may never see the young.

Photography is about composition, and composition is about light and shape dynamics. This photo is on the radical side of lighting strategies -- it pushes the edges. This sets it apart from more conventional photography.

Morning Whitetail Buck, Ponca Wilderness Area
2012 is a big year for whitetail deer. I have seen as many as 8 8 point bucks in a single herd, now just months from the rut. This guy is one of the big ones.

Fawn Crossing Buffalo National River
A game trail passes just north of the low water bridge at Ponca. This fawn heeds directions an keeps left to avoid hazards. This is also a trail for occasional elk crossings.

River Otter Family Portrait
Buffalo National River is now very low, as low as in anyone's memory as a consequence of the 50 year drought. A pooled up river makes locating wildlife much easier. This otter family was feeding in a very large pool, and lucky for me, came together unexpectedly for a family portrait. This might be a lifetime shot of river otter.
River Otters Buffalo National River
After seeing no elk, I was treated to 3 juvenile river otters while hiking the Buffalo National River back to my car. It is always good to see them, and always very hard to get a decent photo -- they are in constant motion.

Mating Blue Herons
#77,280 I not only thought I would never see this, I didn't know this happened. Very early in the morning in a thin fog, this mating dance happened in front of me. Not the greatest photo, but OK for 400mm and no light. Worth a look at a rare event.

Red Wolf
#76,759 Just not sure about this one, but the animal looks exactly like a red wolf I saw online. Here in NW Arkansas once held a population of red wolf. They are considered deeply endangered, under 300 animals, so perhaps this picture matters. I have heard reports of red wolves from people I know, but this is the first one I saw. I was fortunate to get it's picture with a kind of snap shot out the window of our car. I have many frames, but all crops at 400mm. This was in Boxley Valley. It looks nothing like any coyote I have seen here, and I have seen many.

Beaver at Boxley Mill Pond
#75,669 I have been trying to catch this animal, or any beaver really, for at least two years. I have only seen them 4 times, and this time I was able to time his crossing of the Boxley Valley Mill Pond and catch him as he crawled over one of the beaver dams. Like most pictures down there, it was early morning and foggy. Not good picture taking weather at all, a better image is in the future.

#72,515 This is more of a funny picture than a good picture, but this morning I photographed two trumpeter swans trailing a beaver that was dragging a large branch. Egret Art Photo
#49297 Anyone who takes pictures has a few of these shots, maybe a lot of them. This was the perfect pose on the perfect limb, and I missed it. I could not bring myself to delete the image because I liked the composition so much. I decided to try Photoshopping it and seeing what could come of it. I used paint daubs very fine and ended up with a pointillist Chinese painting looking thing. Lesson learned, I will not delete soft photos anymore with strong compositions. I think this is legitimate photo art. I wish it had been a legitimate photo, but the fallback is not too bad.
I write about my photo exploits on my Arkansas gallery and blog. I encourage everyone to visit it,

This one pleases me a lot, because it is so different.

White-winged Crow
#47170 This is a white-winged crow. It is a pretty rare mutation of partial albinism apparently from a deficiency of melanin. It is also called "leucitic", I guess that means whitish. This is from the Boxley Valley of the Buffalo National River. I have a blog designed to explain the area and it's photo opportunties.

Survivor Doe
#46505 I shot this picture in the backyard. If you look closely at the neck of this deer, you will see scars that I am pretty sure are from a survived mountain lion attack. This is one lucky animal. Mountain lions don't miss often, and they sure don't when they get a deer by the neck. Looks like to me she is healing OK. Our backyard has been transformed into a whitetail nursery this year. We have two does and three fawns back there.

Some days the elk are not to be found, so I fall back to other wildlife and landscapes. This heron is one such fall back, and it provided me with an image in flight of this timid bird. For some reason the blue herons feeding in the Buffalo National River are less timid than in ponds. I suspect it has to do with the river noise, but that is just speculation. Another August fall back opportunity are butterflies at midday. They seem to be at about peak now.

Boxing Whitetail Deer
#38,923 I got this photo of "boxing" deer while driving back from a taping in Boxley Valley. It is kind of rare to get photos of this behavior. It happened to be when there was a lot of snow on the ground, and there was a perfect blue sky. This is only the second time I have shot this behavior.

Me and Tiny Black Bear Cub
#39,559 I am not into pictures of me, but this little bear was so cooperative I had to post this one. This will probably become my new bio picture. This was shot at a research visit to a sow bear and her cubs. If you ever run into one of these on a hike, run like hell. The sow bear will kill you if she catches you holding a cub (I am not exaggerating).

Timber Rattler on Rocks
Timber rattler. This beautiful specimen as photographed in the wilderness behind our home. Timber rattlers are docile, but will strike if seriously provoked. They are headed for the endangered species list because people fear rattlers. I followed this big girl around for over an hour and only got her to get in the strike pose when I provoked her, and even then she did not strike. #12287
