Penquin
This is one of our mongrel chickens. We call him Penguin. He is a cross between a Java and a Black Breasted Red Phoenix. Stay tuned, he is only half grown, but already his black feathers are laced in golden red brown. #16,046

Sundance the BBR
This is our finest specimen of Black Breasted Red Phoenix chicken, Sundance. His neck hackles run toward gold, counterpointed with beautiful red brown saddle hackles and his black breast and tail. His tail is now almost 3 feet long. He is allowed to free range so he never will never quite get the plumage of a show bird. #6,890

Slacker, Our Polish Rooster
This is kind of an abstract portrait of our white-crested black polish rooster, Slacker. Slacker just likes to sit around and watch everyone else scratch for food. Taken as the sun was setting, side and back lit. I like the way the light falls and the broad contrast scale of the picture.

Moonpie the Magnificent
This is my "champion" java rooster, Moonpie. The first one we hatched in our incubator, he has a special place in our heart. He probably weighs about 12#. Javas are a heritage breed and nearly died out in the 1980s, they remain on the endagered breeds list. We belong to the national organization seeking to preserve the breed. Moonpie is black, if you look at this picture full size, you realize how absurd color descriptions can be. This was shot under mottled canopy light which reveals all the nuances of his coloration. He is a magnificent specimen, black, but subtly colorful. #3591

Black Breasted Red Phoenix
This is one of our Bleack Breasted Red Phoenix roosters. This is a very rare breed. This was shot under midday light under the dappled light of an oak leaf canopy. Interesting light effects. #0227

Barnyard Gossip
This is one of our White Crested Black Polish roosters looking on as a group of White Crowned Silkies seem to gossip. He was lost a few days later to a domestic dog attack. We called him superfreak, he died trying to defend the flock. #0838

November Guinea Lookout
Our guineas huddled on the deck rail. One appeared to scowl at me and gave me this shot. #1018
