Roadside Blackeyed Susans at Sunrise
I love cutting light to animate images and contour. Yellow flowers seem often to be interpreted "flat". To me this is much better, and it knocks down the yellow quite a bit into darker tones.
06-JUN-2014
Eye of Venus at Last Light
Another unexpected roadside image. This is not a perfect flower, but surely it is perfect light. The longer I take pictures the more I am less concerned about perfection in image. Surely if God doesn't make any junk, these imperfections are a part of the greater perfection. Rather than find fault with the flower, I hope to find the perfection of an image in compelling light. This is one of those images that grabs me.

Roadside Phlox at Last Light
I like to stalk light along our road as the sun sets. This is a good example of the dramatic lighting that shifts constantly during a shoot.
07-JUN-2014
Horsemint
Taken along our road. We live in the Boston Mountain range of the Arkansas Ozarks on a mountain top of 2,200 feet. Our roadside display constantly changes. This horsemint bloom was last week, wild roses are blooming now along with ox eye daisies, black eyed susans, phlox, and ferns. This is a photographer's paradise.
02-JUN-2014
Woodland Primrose
Often there are messages in nature pictures. This one is about determination. This primrose was pounded by hard rain and stomped on along a trail, but it was determined to blossom once more. It did, and it did so in filtered light seeming to spotlight its achievement.

Mountain Azaleas by Runoff
These are the final mountain azaleas for the 2014 wildflower season. They were hanging over a classic runoff fed by dozens of mountaintop springs.

03-MAY-2014
Pussy Toes & Detritus, Black and White
Some pictures seem to require a black and white approach. Pussytoes is a common wildflower here and it finally goes to seed as a small puffball like a dandelion. The interesting thing is that nobody sees this stage, it is fleeting. The flower itself is tiny, about the size of the end of a pencil eraser.
As it often happens in nature, a strand of dead grass fell into the flower head, and served up an interesting abstract composition.
I like found abstract nature photos. The good ones seems relatively rare. This one pleases me.
02-MAY-2014
Backlit Dogwood Bloom with Natural Frame
This is a concept photo. Lots of bokeh, negative space, natural frame and and a single bloom just on fire. I like it, it is really different.

Horned Violet in Mixed Light, Ponca Wilderness
This is an unconventional wildflower photo. The flower is the point of the composition, but the context completes the expression. Most have a first impulse to take photos where the entire flower fills the frame. Over time, I have gone the other direction. I want to express the flower in context, and clearly in a moment in time, meaning a moment in light.
“To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.”

Yellow Dog Tooth Violet
#67,617 This is in bloom now but probably past peak. I have heard these plants called just about everything, but the common name is Yellow Dog Tooth Violet. It is a lillie, but then that is why we need Latin names.
Rue Anemone
#67,485 This is a pink variant of the rue anemone. They are very common in Lost Valley in the Buffalo National River. It is hard to get the exposure on these flowers accurate because of contrast with a dark forest floor. I usually shoot at -1 stop or more to render the delicacy of the flower.

Lost Valley Daffodils
#68423 Spring's first flowers animated by morning light. I like to take these pictures in filtered light to add nuance to otherwise flat colors in full light. This is more emotional to my eye.
