Sylvan Glen, Yorktown, NY June 26, 2004

I frequently go to Sylvan Glen in Yorktown Heights to look for mushrooms to photogragh and learn more about them. I was first introduced to this local treasure by Monica Doherty of the Yorktown Historical Society. She guided me through its winding trails to see the quarry where a community of masons once carved out huge granite stones destined to dress many of the great bridges and builings of New York City.

While I didn't discover too many mushrooms on this day's walk through the park, we (my husband, daughter and I) discovered another of Yorktown's treasures - Boy Scout Troop 174 of Yorktown Heights. The young men had been working there since early in the morning clearing a wide path through the long overgrown entry trail and the meadow. They put down a thick layer of wood chips provided by the town and repaired all of the previously vandalized benches in the meadow area, making it a wonderful place to relax and watch colorful dragonflies dart among the grasses and cardinals and jays move between the wild blueberry bushes. This public service project was designed by Eagle Scout Candidate Thomas L., who was aided in its execution by the Boy Scout Troop 174 and the generous assistance of the Town of Yorktown Parks and Recreation Department. They all deserve our appreciation for their collective contribution to helping ease access and to beautify one of our area's most rich natural treasures. We thank you.
