05/13/06 Saugatuck Trail, Westport, CT

We had a lot of rain the past couple of days and the forest was damp and full of promise of mushrooms to come. Today some of the intreped climbed the white trail through Hemlock stands to more open areas inhabited by Ash, a few young Tulips, Oaks and Maples. In all we found just three Morchella esculenta. But there were other fungi here and there to observe that can be counted on to appear every Spring. Some of these include Auricularia auricula (Wood Ear Mushroom), Tremella mesenterica (Yellow Jelly Fungus), Pluteus cervinus (Deer Mushroom), Peziza badio-confusa (Common Brown Cup), Stereum ostrea, Apiosporina morbosa, Nolanea Verna (Spring Entoloma), Coprinus micaceus (Mica Cap) ,Agrocybe praecox(Spring Agrocybe), Polyporus squamosus (Dryad Saddle) and Stropharia rugosoannulata (Wine-cap Stropharia). The last three mushrooms named I found today at a friend's in White Plains and in my yard.
