Ganoderma applanatum5777.jpg

Westchester Wilderness Trail. Pound Ridge

The pore surface of Ganoderma applanatum is used by artists for drawing. The Artists' Conk is an annual polypore. Its spores are rust brown and sometimes can be seen on top of the fruiting body as well as around it. As Roger reminded us, this polypore releases about five billion spores a day for a period of six months! Obviously not too many succeed in producing progeny - thank goodness!
