The Half-free morel (Morchella semi-libera) has a relatively small cap and long stem compared with the Black morel (Morchella elata). This together with the lighter coloration of the cap should make identification of the two distinct types of morels relatively easy even for the novice. Another difference, of course, is that the bottom of the cap of the semi-libera is not attached to the stipe the way that the cap of either the Black or the Yellow morel is attached.
