It was cold, dank and overcast, but the autumn foliage was brilliant and the company was warm and enthusiastic. We found more variety on today's walk than last week's, but there was little evidence of everyone's favorite edible polypore - Grifola frondosa, Hen of the Woods (-or as Pam aptly named it - "Mother of the Woods"). Among the nicer specimens found were the following: Amanita citrina var. lavendula; Crepidotus applanatus; Hygrophorus sp.; Hypholoma (Naematoloma) fasciculare; Laccaria laccata; Lycogala epidendrum; Mycena sp.; Pholiota squqrrasoides; Plicaturopsis crispa; Polyporus badius; Polyporus brumalis; Psathyrella condoleana; Suillus sp.; Trichaptum biformis; Tricholoma saponaceum; Tricholoma spp.. In addition, people brought from home specimens to be identified, admired, and/or shared. Esther Grun collected several puffballs of various sizes and degrees of maturity; as well as Suillus granulatus and Suillus americanus(edible) found under pines. Don Shernoff had two gorgeous Amanita muscarias to show us. Chef Damon and girlfriend, Jennifer, brought along a cardboard box filled with edible Bluits as well as an incredible cluster of fresh & bitterly inedible Gymnopilus spectabilis. George brought an Elm Oyster mushroom, Hypsizygus tessulatus. And Pam and hubby Joe had a specimen of Grifola - and best of all - a container full of fudgy homemade brownies!
