California Hill Multiple Use Area, Putnam County

We always have a good turnout for this venue, led by Morrs Palmer, whose weekend country home sits adjacent to California Hill Multiple Use Area in lower Putnam County. Morel season has begun! We found perfect specimens of all three morel groups: the black morels; the half-free morels; and the yellow morels. The most plentiful were the black morels (Morchella elata), which we found mainly beneath stately Tulip trees as well as Ash trees. Morrs also found a fairly extensive fresh patch of another Ascomycete, the Pezizas. And in the same area where we found them last year at this time, we discovered several groups of the pink spored spring entoloma, Nolanea verna.
