Vladimir is about 3 hours northeast of Moscow. In 1169 it became the capital of Rus after moving from Kiev until the Mongol invasion in 1238. The population is 140,000 and the city boasts 3 UNESCO sits; The Golden Gate, The Assumption Cathedral, and St. Demetrius Cathedral.
The Golden Gates were built in 1164 and modeled after the Golden Gates built in Kiev. The gates were made of heavy oak that was covered in gilded copper. There is a mound overlooking the gates that is what remains of the wall. Originally it was about 12 meters high. During the tour we were only able to see the gates from across the street.
The Museum of Crystal, Lacquer, and Embroidery is next to the Golden Gates in what was the Trinity Church, an Old Believers church. The museum includes examples of local made material. The Crystal is from Gus Krustalny or glass goose, which was produced nearby since 1756. The goose is a symbol of the town. There are many beautiful examples of their work housed here. Upstairs includes some locally made lacquer boxes as well as embroidery/lace. The area was known for the flax production and products. Downstairs is a gift shop with many unique items.
The Assumption Cathedral is a beautiful 12th century cathedral. It was the largest cathedral in Russia at the time it was built. This is where the crowned princes of Vladimir were crowned and married. The frescos were painted by Andrei Rublev. A statue of Andrei Rublev is in front by the square. From the Cathedral you can follow a flower lined path to a statue of St. Vladimir and an area that overlooks the valley. Go to the other side and you can walk 150 meters to St. Demetrius Cathedral.
St. Demetrius Cathedral was built in the late 11th century. It functions today as a museum. Most of the frescos inside are gone. The carvings on the outside of the walls are fascinating. Continue in back for another view of the valley. In front is a short walk through woods leading to a park and playground that includes horse drawn carriages.
