Kalyazin is a city within the golden ring. Much of it was flooded when a new dam was built in Uglich to provide hydroelectric power to the region. Many of the beautiful buildings and cathedrals were blown up or bulldozed. The rest of the town was rebuilt on higher land.
The bell tower of St. Nicholas' Monastery remains. It is 74.5 meters (244 feet) tall. The bell tower is a popular place for boaters so the government took steps to shore it up and add a dock. Tourists come to the end of the street to see it. A tourist market sits at the end of the street.
