Was born and raised in Mt. Oliver, a couple feet from the Fort, back in the days when they had the air-raid siren in the corner of the lower field, that they used to test every Monday at 7am. One of the highest points on the southern side of the Mt. Washington geological "ridge". You could look out our kitchen window and get a view of downtown that was almost the same as the lookouts over on Grandview Avenue. At night, it was magical. I've been living and working overseas now for almost 20 years, haven't visited home since Xmas 2006. I miss home more than words can say. Once Pittsburgh is in your blood, it never leaves.

THEN WENT TO CONROY MIDDKE SCHOOL AND OLIVER HIGH SCHOOL. REMEMBER NORTH PARK AND THE AVERY AND THE BRONZE DEER. SPENT MANY DAYS AT THE PLAYGROUND THERE. BEAVER AVE. AREA HAD EVERYTHING YOU WOULD NEED, SHOW ( HIPPODROME) SOL JO'S DRUG STORE. ISALY'S ICE CREAM, BOOKS SHOE STORE, FANNING'S DRUG STORE. THE BAKERY ON JUNIATA AND REGINA CHOELI CATHOLIC CHURCH ON JUNIATA. I LOVED THE CITY, IT IS ALWAYS HOME TO ME EVEN THOUGH I LIVE IN OHIO, NORTH SIDE OF PITTSBURGH IS HOME

I was born and raised in South Side within Pittsburgh,Pa. Every time we took leave we visited home. Both my children were born (made sure not on military base)there. Pittsburgh will always be home no matter were the military or government sends us. There is no city, state, or country that can be an equal to Pittsburgh. I love you Pittsburgh, Pa and South Side. I went to the Ivy School of Prof. Art on Market St from 1969 to 1971. I lived on Perrysville Ave. in the North Side and over in Shadyside, too. My one daughter lives in Bellevue now, so I get back to the Burgh pretty much now. It sure has changed since then. No more steel mills, no more Clark bars, and that cool Westinghouse sign is gone too. We saw the Who and the James Gang in '69 at the Syria Mosque, another long-gone icon. Although Pittsburgh is a cleaner city now, I sorta miss those fire-breathing steel mills. It gave the Burgh a gritty character! They may have to change the football teams name to the "X-Steelers" though....LOL The Iron City is still a cool place to be in.....can't wait to get to Primanti Bros.!

Raised as a boy on the North Side. Uncles and brothers worked for Heinz. Ate the little White Tower hamberger across from the park on Ceder Ave, and lived upstairs in the big apartments over the White tower and beside it. Go back to The Burg. every so often, and try to think of how it was then. left Pgh, in1965 for California, but there will never be an other place like dear old Pittsburgh .

My whole family were all born in Penna.Sister and myself were born in McKees Rocks,Pa.I was born 1930,lived on S.Craig St.Oakland.Went to Frick School,Schenley High.I live in Oklahoma now but love to look at the old pictures of Pgh.I watch the Cathedral of Learning being built from our back porch.

I was born and raised on the north side. Hung out on Beaver Ave. I have always had a love and hate relationship with the Steelers but they are the greatest team in the NFL and always will be. Pittsburgh will always be the most beautiful city in the U.S.A I love and miss you Pa.

Pittsburgh resident from 2005-2008. Moved overseas. Although it's fun here, definitely missing the burgh. Looking at getting back there next near! Still have my house there (thank goodness is hasn't sold)

I lived in Pittsburgh from 1984 - 1991.It was the best time of my life and the best city to date I have ever lived in. This city has everything to offer....I miss it and if I ever get a chance to come to the states this is where I would bring my kids to live. Great pictuers you have captured the spirit of Pittsburgh.

WOW! Such great pictures of my hometown. I was born and raised in The Burgh on the North Side. I lived there for 30 years then moved to Brookline where I lived for 18 years then moved to west Texas. There isn't a day that has gone by in the 11 years I have been in Texas that I don't think about Pittsburgh & how much I miss it! I haven't been "home" in 8 years but I remember the last time. As the plane approached those hills filled with the Fall colors I burst into tears. As Dorothy said in the Wizard of Oz... There is no place like home! Thank you for your pictures that took me down Memory Lane.

Great pictures, Been away from Pittsburgh for 22 years and miss it daily. Grew up on Northside and Bellevue. Annunciation Catholic grade school was a beautiful building. Oakland had many treasures too.

Yes, Terry, the word 'Pittsburgh' raises visions of dust and dirt and black skies. Did you all know that Pittsburgh hasn't looked like that for over 50 years?? Check it out! And dont' forget to take your camera along! It's been compared to a European city and San Francisco...don't TELL anyone! Wouldn't it be AWFUL to have multitudes of tourists in our 'fair' city? Beth

I was born in Pittsburgh in 68! I lived on Brighton road in northside "norside" and then in East Liberty until my dad was transferred to a town outside of Phila PA in the late 70's. My entire family, outside of me, my mom, and sister live in Pittsburgh! I miss it so much. Though I now live in DE, Pittsburgh will always be my home as that is where my heart is. I go home as often as I can to visit my relatives and the city. Thank you so much for the picture show, I really appreciated it.

Dear Full Time Cartel, I know exactly what you are saying. I was not born in Pittsburgh, but I spent all of my adult life in and around the city. I lived in Shadyside, then Highland Park for years, then moved to the 'burbs.' Sorry! My husband was a city school principal for all those years! We consider ourselves OF the city whether or not we were living directly IN the city! Many of our friends were still residing IN the city. We miss Pittsburgh as we have retired to Maine where I grew up. We don't claim to be 'Burgers' except in heart...it's kind of like adoption. We CHOSE the city rather than being born to it without any choice at all, so who has greater love? Perhaps we con't even need to get into these kinds of comparisons? We have family in New England and CHOSE to be near them as we age. Oh well....can't have everything!

most of you people that say you love pittsburgh arent even from the burgh. you people are outside the city limits so that is not pittsburgh. i hate when people say there from the closet biggest place around them. now im truely from pittsburgh i live in the southside born and raised in the southside. now im a true pittsburgher not like the ost of you.

I was born and raised in "The Burg", and have lived from Whitiker to Mt. Lebanon. Now I live in Redding California, and have done so for the last 17 years. But Pittsburgh will ALWAYS be my home. I miss the people and the way of life. "Yunz" have the best city in the country.

Born and raised in the "burgh", I now live in Charlotte, NC and find that my fondness for my beloved city has never waned. I either meet individuals who say "Pittsburgh????"....meaning the've never been there; or "PITTSBURGH!....What a surprisingly beautiful place!" Like many of the people commenting on your pictures, I too was born and raised near Pittsburgh. I moved to Oregon in 1977 and have been back to the 'Burgh' only a handful of times. I've had the fortune of traveling much of the world and can safely say that Pittsburgh is one of the most intesesting cities for how it is situated. Along with San Fancisco, it is arguably the most beautiful city in the States. Your pictures have borne that out. I especticially love the picture that contrasts the courthouse to the skyscrapers behind it. For me, your most impressionable work is thatwhicht highlight sthe architectural evolution of my beloved city . Thanks a million!

I was born in Pgh & raised on North Side (Manchester area) .. left 21 years ago for Atlantic City but try to visit home every year. I still have family there as well as parents/gr.parents buried there. I grew up in the area of Heinz Field & I am amazed at the changes going on there. Thank you so much for these great pics. I'm working on a story with Pittsburgh as its setting. Your shots of Fifth Avenue, Market Square, and some of the funkier little places downtown will be helpful to me. In fact, the clock at Kaufman's will make a great meet-up spot for one particular scene. ALL of your photos are splendid, especially the interesting perspectives on some of the bridge shots. Wow! I was a city police officer and would walk a beat downtown. The city certaninly has changed in the 25 years that I have been away. Beautiful pictures!! Like seeing your first love after so many years. Pittsburgh has some great facades and sculpture. The older buidings are very oranate...just look up the next time you walk through downtown Pittsburgh.

great pics! i'm from Pgh but moved to Atlanta nearly 8 yrs ago. i used to enjoy staring at many of the exact same shots you took... especially the bridges and water at night. naturally, my friends and i would then proceed to drink copious amounts of alcohol and carouse the Southside. cant wait to get back! thanks and keep it up

Dear Beth, I was raised in the Pittsburgh area and left in 1976. Your images have brought a tear to my eye and a lump in my throat. Pittsburgh, way back when, was a dirty town with a layer of grime muting its colors, but not its spirit. Over the years it has made much progress...not without cost as the mills and that aspect of its culture are gone. It is much cleaner and has become much more colorful, as your images very clearly show. Not only are your images great, but your selection of locations/things to shoot were right on the money. Thank you for sharing your images and reminding me of my Pittsburgh heritage. Joe Kertesz

Your picture, entitled Ball Park Detail (water spigot), is not a water spigot. Those are standpipes that the fire department would use in the event of a fire. They are piped into the sprinkler system in the park, and the first arriving firefighters can use these standpipes to hook a handline to and begin fighting the fire until the next engine in can hook to a hydrant.
