I notice how often you center your subject in the frame and divide the image in half by putting the horizon in the middle of the frame as well. There should be no rules for composition, Beth -- photographers should feel free to put the subject and the horizon wherever they wish. However centered placement such as this creates a formal, predictable and often static image, lacking in tension and emphasis. The sky is not the issue here, as much as the textured foreground. If you create an anchor within that textue at the bottom to add depth and perspective, and use less sky, your chances of creating emphasis to express an idea increase. That is what I tried to d with a similar subject at:http://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/35601771 (I was not that far away from the barn -- a 24mm wideangle lens allowed me to move in on the barn, yet still get strong foreground emphasis. I placed the barn to the right, and minimize the sky as well.)
