Emergency at New Haven federal building caused by cigarettePosted June 15, 2007 Updated 12:12 PM (New Haven-WTNH) - An unextinguished cigarette butt caused an emergency that led to the evacuation of the federal building in New Haven. The building, located on Church Street, was evacuated shortly before Noon. A federal marshal on the scene tells News Channel 8 someone did not put out their cigarette correctly. A custodian swept the butt into a bucket and placed the bucket in a supply closet. When it started to smolder, the fire department was called and folks were told to evacuate the building. No one was hurt. Roads in the surrounding area were closed for the emergency vehicles.
