1960 Ives (yellow bike)

I purchased this Italian bike a few years ago from a friend who bought it new in 1960 from a shop in Beverly Hills.

Originally, the bike had 10 speeds. The original owner, Hal Munn of L.A. Wheelmen fame, gave it a triple. He rode it many thousands of miles, including centuries and double centuries.

Apparently, the Ives was all Campy when new. When Hal converted it to a triple, Suntour Superbe and Sugino parts were substituted. Currently, the rear hub and seatpost are Campy. I added a 6 speed freewheel.

Tubing is German Mannesmann Extra, rare today.

This beauty has a new paint job (done by CyclArt, in Vista, CA) and I've recently added a Brooks Professional saddle.

This is probably the best riding bike that I've owned.

If anyone has information about this make, I'd love to hear from them.

I have a late '40s IVES it is without a doubt the most comfortable/forgiving bike i've ever ridden. i've had it since 1955 Nisi tubulars on Campy low/Steel centers 15-17 ga cross 4 IVES cranks & BB, Campy Gran Sport shifting FNI leather seat, Ambrosio bars and adjustable gooseneck Universal extra brakes with quick dropout levers it hangs in my bedroom and has since '55 there was a decal but no head badge originally the ends of the forks, chainstays and seat tubes were chromed Mannesmann Extra 1 tubing Noel Highley

What a kick to see your post! Hal Munn is my father, and I was just talking to him about Iveses. He bought yours for himself and a companion bike for my mom in 1960. I had called him wanting to know a little about the bike because I'm moving and wanted to sell it if it was collectible. To say he put many thousands of miles on his is an understatement indeed. In my childhood, if you wanted time with dad, you went on a bike tour. Hal lives in Garden Grove now--I called and read him your post and he laughed and said to tell you hi. He chiefly remembers your with forays on Fargo St. Regarding the Ives I'm selling, Hal told me it was equipped with bolts halfway down the stays to accomodate a rack, and this was considered a "woman's" outfitting.

I have an IVES, black in color and was given to me about 20 years ago by a friend. I am trying to figure out what to do with it as it does need a lot of work-like new cables, brakes, new wheel frames, etc. It has a leather seat still. I am starting to bike more and more these days as my running days seem to be limited-would like to know what to do with this bike-where would I send it for a complete refurbishment?

Did you ever get any more info about the Ives ? I am looking at buying a chrome plated one, but am having a rough time finding out more about them...someone suggested they were built by Olmo. Thanks, Tom Sanders
