Bowl or no bowl in the background?
I can't decide whether I find the bowl distracting

The bowl fills a void... I vote "with".

The "without" is less distracting...

Definitely without, much cleaner versioner, your eyes dont wander round the image, it stays at the subject!

I prefer it without! Cleaner, sharper, the eye remains focused on the main theme and notes its variations.

I agree with John Buffin. I had also made my decision before looking at other people's responses. With the bowl, it adds character and background...more of a natural setting. Without the bowl it seems more of a staged shot and the harsh horizontal line is distracting...at least to me, because it's not level with the frame. Having said that, I also agree that if the bowl were bigger and slightly more visible, it would have a stronger impact as part of the background. Just my opinion.

bigger bowl would have been better IMHO. Since it is small and insignificant here I think I would go with no bowl.

I'm going to be the odd ball and say with. I actually decided before I looked at the other replies too. I just think the bowl adds depth to the shot without being too distracting. Without the bowl, it just leaves a strong horizontal line back there. But again, I seem to be the only one who likes it with.

gotta agree with karen

I think w/out also, but if the bowl were a little bigger to naturally infer the progression I would have liked that one better.
(eh?????)

I don't want to bowl you over, but I think the one on the right is much preferable.

The second one...without. Cleaner and sharper. Definately without!

Without. Without defines the onion better. Gives it a more 3D effect.
