Pouring Flame

The incredible DOF is achieved by shooting a sequence of 7 frames with a slight shift in focus.
The frames were then assembled by stacking with Helicon Focus.

An SB-800 with a homemade soft box was position at the top
while a mirror-like reflector was fixed at the bottom.

Hi Dierk,
I don't have a macro focusing rail. Turning the focus ring on the lens is the only way to shift the focus and it works. The trick is the DOF of each image much overlap as much as possible, that's why I stepped down the aperture to f/11. Helicon Focus is a good but not perfect software, you need to understand its behaviours by trying different apertures in different situation. PC lenses are good for focusing in different angles but not for combining foci that are vertical to the lens' axis (like this picture). C.M.

I just love it and the light (and all the other ones in this series!!)
Did you really shift in focus or did you use a macro focusing rails?
I read somewhere, that shifting focus does not work, because you change the focal length?
I just got the Nikon 85/2.8 PC TS lens (examples in my gallery) in order to get better DOF and would like to combine it with the technic of Helicon, if possible.

CM, you always make a difference. You presented this Tulip very special. It looks like a buring candle with bright spot in center and surrounded by hot flame. My monitor nearly melted. It's very amazing.
