Index Of The Vascular Flora Of Arkansas

Although there are many wildflowers occurring in Arkansas I have yet to identify, I am attempting to compile a comprehensive gallery that will display the Common Name and the Scientific Name of each plant. To make viewing easier I have attempted to arrange them in sub-galleries by flower Color, although many plants will have color variations depending on a number of factors. This system is certainly not perfect and I welcome ANY suggestions that will improve this attempt to assist others who are novices (like myself) as well as the more knowledgable enthusiasts. Feel free to use any of the information for your own collection and let me know if I have failed to identify any plant correctly...Craig.

Great photos! I took hike last week in Lost Valley on the Buffalo River and spotted 25 different wildflowers. I document too. Great job on this site

I am new to Arkansas and the south, coming from Minnesota. I immediately set about learning the southern wildflowers and this website is amazing. THANK YOU!

I am impressed. Searched my books. Searched the web. And your site immediately identified the Wild Red Buckeye for me.

Flora is disappearing from Arkansas, to judge from the tales my father told. Where is the Paw-Paw and the wild plum? The sassafrass and the juniper? Thank you for your excellent site.

What stunning photography! I live in Shirley, AR. which is in Van Buren county. I am photographing all the plant life on our forested acreage and am so pleased to happen upon your gallery. These photos are better than any I have seen in any book on the subject. Thank you so much for helping me to identify my wildflowers. Do you have an e-mail address that you wouldn't mind sharing? I have a couple of photos of plants that I couldn't find in your gallery and am hoping that you could identify them.

help identify !!!!!!! i have found a flower (????) pretty sure in the forest and it has white lacey hanging bells off bright light pink hollow stems average height is 4 - 6 inches grows in clumps and grows in the fall would love to know what it is ty

Simply lovely! We just retired and spent the last 2 winters in Northern Arkansas. Something new blooms almost every day and thanks to you, I can now identify some of them. Will be taking more pictures this winter and have added this to my list of favorites. Should be able to identify much more. Thank you so much.

hi craig, beautiful pictures. i can see that your site is very useful for identifying a plant. i am moving to arkansas this summer and what would be nice for me is to be able to use your site to plant my flower garden with natives. however, that would require a searchable index - specific characteristics like bloom period (time of year and duration), water and sun needs, and whether they attract fauna. i don't know anything about constructing websites, but that is probably a lot of work and may not be what you are after.

My husband and I are avid wildflower "finders". We use 5-6 wildflower books to help identify them. But the ones we can't identify with the books, we can ALWAYS identify by using your website. The ones that we can identify from the books--well, your website has better pictures! I would love to be able to download your entire website so I can look on the computer in the field--and I would gladly pay for the privilege!

CAN ANYONE INDENTIFY A WILDFLOWER ? IT HAS A SMALL BELL SHAPE IT'S WHITE WITH SOME STEAKS OF PURPLE ON THE INSIDE OF THE BELL, THE LEAVES ARE LONG AND NARROW. THANK-YOU

My wife and I just returned from an anniversary trip to the Norfork area. I photographed some beautiful wildflowers there, and this site helped me identify them (and gave me some ideas for better photographs). This is the best documented Arkansas wildflower site that I have found on the web. Keep up the good work!

My husband was clearing some brush and weeds when he found 2 flowers we had not seen on our place. I don't know how many websites I looked into before I came across yours. We didn't really expect to find either one of the flowers, but it was so easy to find them there. We found pictures of the American Strawberry Bush and the red Cardinal flower. We want to thank you for the work you put into this, your pictures are stunning! and your website is so easy to use. I will be using your pictures to identify many more flowers here is south Arkansas. Thanks again!!

Craig, your green/brown flowers are examples of the spider milkweed or Asclepias viridis. We have photographed them on World Peace Wetland Prairie at 1121 South Duncan Avenue in Fayetteville each spring for several years. They are the first species of milkweed to bloom there each year and harbor a generation of monarch caterpillars before the swamp milkweed and other species are mature.

Keep up the good work. I plan go through some of my unidentified flower photos and compared with yours. Please look at mine and we can help one another correct our IDs as we look things up or get comments from other people.
I have many things online that I now realize are wrong, but seldom go back to find and correct them unless someone alerts me to old errors and snap judgments. In 2203, we got the late Carl Hunter to identify some things for the aubunique.com site and really miss him.

Thanks for stopping by David...Yes, the Ozark Wake Robin is also known as the Least Trillium. I visited your blog site and really liked your photos. We obviously have many similar wildflowers.
