The Chitrai Festival in April/May is the most important one of the year. It celebrates the marriage of Meenakshi (Parvati)
with Sundareswar (Lord Shiva). The two deities, riding on a golden bull and wearing pearl crowns, are brought on a
spectacular procession around the town. Lord Alagar’s (Vishnu) procession to the bank of the Vaigai River on the full
moon day is one of the most interesting events of the festival.
