A collection of Railroad photographs from the 1980's and 1990's of the Southern Pacific Rail Road in the area of the Sacramento River Canyon and around Mt Shasta in Northern California.
For most of the 20th Century the boundaries of the 'Shasta Division' was from Gerber, California north to Ashland Oregon on the original route and Crescent Lake on the Natron Cut-off, with crew changes at Klamath Falls and Dunsmuir, also Hornbrook in the distant past. The re-organisations of the 1970's eliminated Gerber and Crescent Lake as a Division Points. North of Dunsmuir become part of the SP Oregon Division while south of Dunsmuir became part of the very large SP Western Division.
Dunsmuir's importance had been as Division Offices including a major Engine facility and crew change point but has lessened as the RR purchased each generation of modern Diesel locomotives. It continued to be a helper locomotive terminal until the closure of the Siskiyou Line, Dunsmuir continues to be a crew change point in the modern era.
