Tundra Swan

Samish Flats WA

That big neck band seems a little much, but I guess it beats killing them to see where there from.

Cool bird...

I don't know, but IMHO bands should be made a bit more keeping in mind the integrity of the birds... If we know that -in many cases- partners are chosen by their looks, how do we know this HUGE and COLORFUL band isn't affecting this individual and his development in life anyhow?

Besides... who would like to have a wide and thick band in the neck?... Leg rings, earrings and other things seem more appropriate... ha!... and I thought the colorful flags on the legs of the waders in Asia were a bit too much!...

I understand and respect the meaning of the bands, but couldn't we find a nicer one?... like if selecting for ourselves to wear?

Your photograph is nice quality , the band seems tight but hopefully it is made to stretch.
I guess this is one way learn there travel habits by banding them.
Tack sharp image with nice background bokeh.

Could they make that band any bigger? Great shot of swan in flight.

Overkill, indeed! Poor thing. Bad enough it has an ankle bracelet...certain trauma for the bird! Lovely flight shot, Tom! V~

I guess it makes it easy to identify the bird with just binoculars - black and white would suit it better!!!!

Beautiful capture, Tom. That's a massive band round its neck.

Beeeutiful. The band does seem a bit tight, but perhaps b/c he is just taking off? Reading the other comments it is interesting to learn about the band and its purpose. not the best for pictures, but I guess it is helpful to the bird. :) Nice shot Tom!

Nice shot and colors on this swan photo. It looks like she is banded on the leg too. I wonder why they need two bands.
This is a lovely in flight image but this girl just doesn't have the grace of the hunting hawks and falcons that you show. I guess that I'm comparing a "connie" to a fighter jet. ~V~

Great stop action capture in such dismal lighting Tom. The people who band these swans know exactly what they are doing, and are very devoted to the birds. The Swan we rescued here last year was gently transferred to a plush rehab facility where she was treated like a queen until regaining her strength and weight. She was released WITH a green neck band. If she ever returns here we will be able to ID her with absolute certainty, from a distance without disturbing her in the slightest. Tom's shot is so sharp that "PY6" is easily visible. I am sure that some researcher somewhere would be very interested in this information, and would be very grateful to see this image. But, I agree that the bands are plug ugly for our purposes.

The band looks a little tight as well, these swans are becoming rare so I guess they like to track them easily. Great shot Tom....We used to call them Whistling Swans:-)

Superb work, Tom. Looks like a slow motion landing comming up.It is most disturbing that they overly band these fine creatures!!
