June 25 2006:
Postcards from Heaven

These are some family postcards that have survived the past 90 years.

The seaside postcard is so typical of the period and was sent in 1915 by my aunt as a little girl to her father, who was then serving with the British Army in Dorset.

“To Greet my Girlie” and “Mizpah” were sent from my Grandfather to my Grandmother at about the same time, the former being postmarked Plymouth, where he was stationed for a time.

Compare with today. Discuss.

These are wonderful. Bizarrely enough, I was looking through my Grandfathers old photo's and postcards last night after retrieving them from my attic, a friend had reminded me that they were there by something they showed me. Very precious memories of by-gone days, I love old photo's and appreciate when people have the ability to capture the authenticity of times long ago by modern day techniques. These are the genuine article, weathered by many years but still with the character and charm that has been lost in the present day.

I have a postcard sent one morning by my grandfather to his then fiance my grandmother saying see you this evening - that's how fast the local post was in 1910!

Lovely snaps of history.
