My friend Barbara came over tonight and we started going through my family heirlooms. Amongst them is a pouch worn by my Grandad in the First World War when he was in France. I saw it as one of the less interesting objects, but Barbara used her feminine intuition and looked inside it. To my astonishment, she found what she expected – a lock of hair! Postcards they wrote at the time certainly testify their love for each other and I am bowled over that a lock of my Nan’s hair has survived as a reminder.
I’ve presented it together with a ‘silk’, one of thousands that were made by French women at the time for our homesick soldiers.
