November 26 2004:
A Kiss and a Lock

My friend Barbara came over tonight and we started going through my family heirlooms. Amongst them is a pouch worn by my Grandad in the First World War when he was in France. I saw it as one of the less interesting objects, but Barbara used her feminine intuition and looked inside it. To my astonishment, she found what she expected – a lock of hair! Postcards they wrote at the time certainly testify their love for each other and I am bowled over that a lock of my Nan’s hair has survived as a reminder.

I’ve presented it together with a ‘silk’, one of thousands that were made by French women at the time for our homesick soldiers.

This is absolutely beautiful Ray...and how well the lovely locks of hair are still...your Grannies D&A right there is enough to give you goosebumps. The embroidery is another treasure as well
