A few weeks ago I talked of the ‘Old Brown Box’ that my Great Grandfather made and was subsequently used to keep all sorts of old family stuff in. Amongst the things I found there was this old receipt – it seems that my Great Aunt Esther had a passion for the piano – or should I say the pianoforte? She only came from quite a humble background and the so the outlay of Twenty-three pounds and two shillings probably represented the biggest single purchase she had ever made. Using average earnings as a measure, that would be like spending about £7,000 today.
By the way, note the seller’s signature across a penny postage stamp – we had a ‘Stamp Tax’ here in England, which I think may have continued up to the 1960’s, whereas in America I think you revolted against it pretty soon after us Brits try to impose it on you!.
