"Picture that tells a story"
The Freedom Monument in Riga was constructed in 1935 and honours the soldiers killed in Latvia's War of Independence between 1918 and 1920. For centuries, Latvia has been ruled by either the Swedes or the Russians and presently the country is enjoying a period of independence, one that started on 4th May 1991. The country was also sovereign for around 20 years prior to the Second World War.
The populous appear passionate about their independence and the Latvia flag flies from most buildings. Even buses and trams in the city fly both the Latvian and EU flag.
Note the woman here draped in the national flag.
The day I took this was a public holiday in Latvia, following on from Independence Day. It was an easy week for many citizens, as 1st May was Labour Day!
