Johnston Family Weekend - 1948

Johnston Road, Clarence Twp., Russell Co., Ontario, Canada

This photo was taken, I believe, just before we moved from Toronto up north to Ear Falls. My Dad wanted to visit "home" again. This was the 2nd Johnston family farm and was located in Clarence Twp., Russell Co., Ontario, on Johnston Road (what else?). James and Isabella Johnston bought it in the early 1900's. At the time of the photo it was in the hands of my Uncle Wellie and Aunt Maggie (actually my Dad's aunt & uncle, but that's what I called them too). Notice the lightning rods on the top of the barn in the background? They didn't work. The barn had a nasty habit of attracting lightning and burning to the ground which it did 3 times. The last time was it for Uncle Wellie. He had all of his crops in it waiting for higher prices. It was a devastating loss. He packed up and moved to Ottawa.

If you look carefully you can see Stanley holding up a chicken feather behind Wellie's head at the far right - he was always joking.

Standing: Maggie (Derby) Johnston, Alex Wylie, Jim Palmer, Fred Presley, Evelyn Johnston, Glen Johnston, Stanley Bahnsen, Weldon Johnston.

Seated, Center: Isabella (Muir) Johnston, Florence (Anderson) Johnston, Connie (Bahnsen) Palmer, Ada (Johnston) Bahnsen.

Seated, Front: Freida Johnston, Kathleen Johnston, James "Buddy" Johnston trying to hold Clifford Johnston, "Bud" Fisher.

The orginal photograph was tilted 3°+ CCW. I straightened it up, added to the sides and top, cropped a wee bit from the bottom and widened the border as that seemed to be a good "fix". full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto
