Newbie Castle Ruins

Pearland, Texas

Image from the book, History of the Johnstones 1191-1909 by C. L. Johnstone.

I took the image into Photoshop in an effort to enhance some of the details. This is the best image that I could extract. I am not quite sure just which pile of rubble is the castle ruins. There appears to have been a low stone wall encircling the castle too which I am assuming is the dark area to the right side and center of the photograph.

Notice the growth of the windswept tree! It has permanently bent by the prevailing winds - I assume that the winds came in from the seaside.

King James VI enjoyed visiting Newbie Castle for the deer hunting. Newbie Castle was the only castle large enough in the area to entertain the King. He was responsible in large part for bankrupting the Johnston of Newbie family as they had to entertain and feed both the King and his retinue. In addition they had to maintain at their own expense a ready force of 200 armed spearmen to protect the border against English raiders. It is said that the Kings did this in order to keep the Johnston of Newbie laird from becoming too powerful in the West March. The Kings were not all that oblivious to their financial plight as it is said that money was slipped quietly to the lairds of Newbie from time to time to keep them solvent.

From the looks of the tree we can deduce that the coastline is very windy.
