i and my mom and dad lived on moen from 1954 to 1956 ot thereabouts. we lived in quonset huts, first on the hill across the road from the cave with the artillery piece in it, and then on the hill overlooking the old navy brig. i remember turning seven there. of course in my child perspective, truk and moen were beautiful but boring. there weren't many kids to play with and i went to school at home, taught by my mom via the calvert method which was a correspondence course out of baltimore. i remember all of the japanese aircraft on the airstrip, they were all crowded at the far end. there were zeros and other aircraft and they were used by the trukese as clothsline hangers. they also took parts off of the planes to use as fishing weights. there were also kawanishi flying boats half sunk in the water-i don't remember how many but not a lot-along the shore, i remember that the jungle sort of hung over the planes. the brig was full of japanese rifles. i remember seeing a short rifle that i really liked. years later i found out that it was a tanker rifle.
most everyone drove around the island on the unpaved roads in jeeps and other vehicles that were military hand-me-downs. when it rained during the rainy season it seemed to rain forever and it was cool. the supply ship came in every few weeks and everyone went down to the quonset hut that served as the supermarket. not much selection. i remember that we had fresh limes and breadfruit. i also saw wrecked ships but didn't think much of it at the time. after two years we moved to guam. i'd like to see truk again. beautiful place but lots of problems now.

HAVE LIVED IN MICRONESIA THREE TIMES IN MY LIFE. FIRST TIME WHEN I WAS 13, LIVED IN PONAPE, YAP AND MAJURO. SECOND TIME WHEN I WAS 23 MARRIED WITH CHILDREN WE LIVED IN CHUUK I WORKED FOR PUBLIC WORKS. THIRD TIME WHEN I WAS 47 WENT BACK AND WORKED FOR PUBLIC WORKS AGAIN. WILL RETURN NEXT FOR MY 50 YEAR RELOOK OF THE ISLANDS. I LIVE IN PENSACOLA FLORIDA. GREAT PICYURES GOOD MEMORIES. THANKS

I was a PCV in the Truk District from 66 to 68. Lots of memories. I spent 3 months on Moen then went to Tamatam Island in the Westerns for 18 months. Thanks for the pics.

Chuck this is just how i remember the islands. You have done a wonderful thing keeping all those memories and sharing them with the rest of the world. I thank God for you and these photos. Do you have any more of the people that lived there with us at the time we lived in Truk? How many years has it been? Do you ever plan a trip back to Truk Island?
