Dome in District Court Room

Columbus, Texas

This Tiffany style glass dome is in the 2nd floor District Court Room of the Columbus, Texas 1890 Colorado County Courthouse. Originally, the Courthouse had a tower. The July 21, 1909 hurricane tore off the roof and tower. Every room was damaged in the courthouse. Repairs were made, but instead of replacing the tower, a stained glass dome was added. In 1939 a basement was added to the building and in 1950 more space was added... this stress cracked the stained glass. It was removed and a false ceiling was put up. In 1978 the false ceiling was removed and the dome was restored. The umbrella-shaped glass sculpture was added in 1980. The Courthouse is a Texas Historical Landmark, a State Archaeological Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places. The Courthouse is still in use.
