I well remember Gary before it became the crap hole crime-infested city it is today. I remember shopping at both Kresge's and Goldblatt's department store with my parents when I was a boy. Gary was in the midst of it's decline then, I'd say that was in the mid sixties. Once the steel mills took a nosedive, and middle class whites moved out of Gary, that was the end. Now it's almost all blacks, with just a few of us old white people who have lived there all our lives and both races now live against a backdrop of despair, crumbling infrastructure replete with gangs and drugs and crime. I feel sorry for all who are stuck living in this crap hole, because that is all it will ever be, much like Detroit, Cleveland, East St Louis, East Camden and Phildelphia. Let's not kid ourselves, Gary once was a nice place to live, it will never again be nice, it's LOST.

My Grandparents & father were born in Gary and they have many many fond memories of Gary until about the 1970's when they moved out. I love my grandparents and would love to have seen Gary in their eyes instead of the dereliction of today....

It is such a shame that Gary turned into a bad city. Back in the day Gary was a awesome town with all of the cool shops and was a nice area.
