I agree, Traveller ... from everything I've heard, he seemed to be one of the good ones! - Ken

You know, part of the appeal of Elvis was always that he seemed to be and was a decent guy. Traveller

Just saw this on the Tupelo newspaper's web site today:http://djournal.com/news/elvis-presley-birthplace-celebrates-fans/. Apparently this is "Elvis Week" in Tupelo! - Ken

Paul, the birthplace is an official Mississippi landmark located in the 15-acre Elvis Presley Park in Tupelo. Before Elvis was born, his father, Vernon, borrowed $180 to purchase the materials to build the house (total cost). Vernon and some of his relatives did the actual construction. Later, after Elvis was born, Vernon was unable to repay the $180 loan and lost the house. The family eventually moved to Memphis. In 1956, the now famous Elvis and his band returned to Tupelo to play at the local fairgrounds. Elvis discovered that his old home still existed and was for sale. Using proceeds from the concert, he bought the house and the surrounding property and donated it to the city of Tupelo to build a park for the kids of his former neighborhood. It's reported that around 50,000 people visit the birthplace each year. - Ken

No doubt this is in some kind of park and has to be a well protected historic site. Paul

That should have been, "Sigh,"....lol. Yes mine was larger also but with the same porch swing that my mother loved except that it faced out, lengthwise.

sigh.

(Big time memories)

That's true, Traveller. I grew up in a house that had a porch much like this ... It had more than 2 rooms and had indoor plumbing (Elvis' didn't) and it wasn't shotgun style (Elvis' was), but otherwise it was very similar in style to this. - Ken

A lot of us that grew up in the South recognize this construction...sign, I kind of miss it. Best Wishes, Traveller

Yeah, I wouldn't want to be in there during a bad storm ... on the other hand, though, the structure has survived for around 80 years on this same spot ... but, I'm sure it has had one or two (or more) restorations during that time. - Ken

An historic structure, indeed.

I can tell from here that he didn't dig the footings deep enough. ;-) Paul
