In April 2009, I spent several days in the Imperial Valley of California photographing these interesting little birds. All were photographed along the farm roads near the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge. Equipment consisted of a Canon EOS 1DMk2N with an EF500/4 lens. All were taken from the window of an automobile with the lens resting on a beanbag. These are fearless little birds, standing their ground beside their burrows far longer than one might expect.
