Haida Gwaii is a group of islands on the edge. If feels like the end of the world when you are there, just trees right up to the sea. And geologically Haida Gwaii is the end because just a few miles offshore to the west the continental slope plunges down to the abyss of the Pacific Ocean floor and the deep trench of the Queen Charlotte Fault. The eastern flank of the archipelago was covered by glaciers during the last great ice age, but the western shores were ice free, which has meant that some species evolved with unique characteristics. About 12 000 years ago, the first peoples arrived. The Haida nation remained a vibrant culture right up to European contact, when because of disease, up to 90% of the population died.
