St Peter Mancroft

St Peter Mancroft is the largest church in Norwich and one of the finest medieval parish churches in England.
It was built between 1430 and 1455 and it stands at one side of the market place which is to the west of Norwich Castle. In Norman times the market was on open farmland.
Mancroft is derived from 'Magna Crofter', the Latin for great field or great open space.
Norwich has a long tradition of bell ringing and it was in St Peter Mancroft that the first true peal of 5,040 changes was rung in 1715. I have a special interest in this because Samuel Thurston, my 4 x great grandfather, was a bell ringer there and is buried at the foot of the bell tower.
