I was stationed on Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands, September 1947 to March 1949. I worked at the transmitter station that handled the radio teletype traffic from Hawaii to Guam, and also ground to air - taffic control.
One of the Master Sgts had a ham radio (KX6AF) in the old Jap lookout tower on the extreme West end of the island, and I spent many nights there listening in. 10 meter band.Collins BC-610 loaded to about 1500 Watts. Antenna up at least 100' above the ocean, beaming right out over the ocean.
We raised many places world wide. Talked to the mayor of Coventry, England one night, and also talked to "Bob" in Russia. Didn't know more about him than that. Also talked to a man in his car in California, talking to us on his portable outfit.
