Our walk today started off in the town of Llantwit Major which is situated about 10 miles from where I live. Llantwit Major forms part of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and is steeped in Welsh history and was an ancient seat of learning for the Welsh saints. Almost every period in history has left its mark on Llantwit Major - you can see Iron Age hill forts, a Roman villa just outside the town, Celtic crosses, a medieval grange (or farm), and fine Tudor buildings - especially the Town Hall, Old School, Great House and the pubs in the Town Square. The town still retains an air of antiquity with its maze of little lanes and old-world shops, narrow streets, quaint stone cottages and old inns. Parking our cars nearby the Old Town Hall, we walked down through the old part of the village, and headed along the coastline until we came to St Donats. St Donats Castle is one of the oldest continually inhabited castles in Wales, with a rich and colourful history that stretches from 12th century Norman Britain to the present ownership by Atlantic College.
