Cardiff celebrated its centenary as a city and its 50th year as our capital in Wales in 2005. The city was buzzing in anticipation of the celebrations so now was the time to pay a visit. Cardiff, is a vibrant, cosmopolitan capital and has undergone enormous regeneration over the past decade or so. Its traditional attractions – a fairy-tale castle in the middle of the city, a fine museum housing one of the best Impressionist collections in Europe outside Paris and the world-renowned Museum of Welsh Life – are now complemented by a stunning waterfront development in Cardiff Bay and world-class venues such as the awesome Wales Millennium Centre and the iconic Millennium Stadium, the biggest under-cover stadium in Europe.
If you visit the city of Cardiff, a visit to the Senedd is well worth it. This wonderful looking building is situated in a prime position on the waterfront down at Cardiff Bay. It houses the National Assembly for Wales’ Siambr (debating chamber) and Committee Rooms. The Senedd is completely transparent at the public level and sits on a slate plinth which steps upwards from the waterfront and houses the private spaces of the building. A lightweight, gently undulating roof shelters both internal and external spaces and is drawn down to form a funnel-like enclosure over the Siambr.
