The New Stadhuis (town hall), on Dam Square, next to the Nieuwe Kerk. Also known as the Koninklijk Paleis. Work began in 1648,
at the end of the 80 Year War with Spain. It sits on more than 13,600 wooden piles driven into the ground for the foundations.
It is still used occasionally by the Dutch royal family for official functions.
