Abingdon Bridge began as a stone bridge in 1416, built by The Brotherhood of Christ (which later
became the charity Christ’s Hospital – see the image of Albert Park) to replace an earlier timber
bridge or possible a ferry. In 1453, three new arches were added to the southern end of the bridge
(those shown in the picture). The present bridge was reconstructed in 1927. There are actually
two bridges, separated by Nag’s Head Island.
