Jeremiah O'Brien

SS Jeremiah O'Brien was built in 1943 and served with distinction during the war. She carried ammunition, grain, and other dry cargo from the United States to Great Britain, took part in the D-Day invasion of France in June 1944, and later carried cargo to ports in South America, Australia, India, and the Philippines. Today, the sole still-active survivor of the great D-Day armada, Jeremiah O'Brien symbolizes the accomplishments of the American merchant marine and embodies an extraordinary chapter in our national history.

My favorite thing to do when I was a kid in SanFrancisco was to spend the day on the Jeremiah O'Brien. I'd pack a lunch and ride my bike down to Fort Mason and spend hours looking and thinking. To me she was the most beautiful object in the world. By the time I was in High School, I had the opportunity to take my grandfather to visit the ship and to my surprise discovered that he had earned an unfortunate round trip ticket on a Liberty troopship while in the Army in the Pacific. Though he enjoyed reminicing about his youth during the war, and his visit brought him back, he said that during the entire voyage everyone on board was seasick and hot, taking turns to go on deck and roll in agony.

I worked on these ships in the late 60's at the Bethlehem Shipyard.One of my jobs as part of the paint crew was to scrape and paint the bilges in the engine room. The ships were in drydock and the boilers cold. I have always wanted to be in one of those engine rooms when they were under weigh; see and feel that beating heart. Now is my chance.

I sailed on another Liberty Ship, the Nick Stoner, as a child in 1944. Our family was split, with mother, sister and me in officers' quarters, and my brother and father in the hold on another ship. Both ships left Egypt and joined a convoy to New York and Newark, landing after a rough one-month voyage. It's a thrill to me to see the Jeremiah O'Brien, because it's identical to the Nick Stoner, which I got to know well. Thanks to all who have preserved and maintained this ship!

Really enjoyed the Jeremiah photos. Checked out your other Fleet Week galleries & they're all great photos! Where were you perched for some of the shots in the 2005 Fleet Week gallery? My husband & I were out in the Bay aboard the Jeremiah during the show on Saturday. We would recommend any cruise they offer. Every part of it was great & it was a treat for us because the Revolutionary War Hero Jeremiah O'Brien is my husband's great, great, great, great, great uncle.

As a teenagers,my friends and I would fish off the Fort Mason Pier. It was the early 80's .One Saturday night there was a benifit held on the O'brien. A good band played on a stage that was actually the first forward cargo hatch. Being teenagers we boarded without permission and began to blend in. We were offered hot dogs, and somebodys homemade potatoe salad, even beer. the holy grail. Soon we were in the main engineering space. And down to the prop alley hatch, then down the prop alley all the way to the end. That was nice. Upon returning we halted by a locked prop alley hatch. I climbed up a escape scuttle in pitch black,but couldnt figure out how to get it open, We then proceeded to use huge monkey wrench's that were lying in the bilge and began to beat furiously on the the hull. One friend was still fishing on the pier . He later said he never heard a thing. We got out! alot of guys didnt. I was getting off the bus at RTC San Diego 4 years later

My old man served in the Atlantic and the Pacific in WW2. I tell people we won the war because Dad gave it his all. A lot of guys gave it all they had. Dad passed on in November 2003. I really miss him.

My father, was in charge of restoreing the obrien, when it came out of the moth-ball fleet. I find it odd, that nothing is mentioned about him, or the men that helped, get the ship to the point it is in now. What do you people think, who read this?

Does one of the available videos from the 1994 cruise to England mention relief food for the English citizenry, as one of the reasons the locals were so emotional when JO'B berthed? Especially, do I recall correctly that one mention is of canned SPAM? I think such occurred on the waterfront in Southamption. Mike McMorrow Arlington, VA

I served as a volunteer Engine Cadet in May of 1999 on the Jeremiah O'brien. After an all-nighter repairing damage to the engine room, I was rewarded with a great cruise and some great chow onboard the ship. After graduating from the US Merchant Marine Academy, I went active duty Navy and to this day still think about the Jeremiah O'brien and that weekend. It has been a career building experience and I hope I can volunteer again some day.

My father sailed with the Merchant Marines the last 2 years of WWII and he is 81 and still remembers it as one of the greatest and proudest moments of his life. Its such a great gift and legacy to friends, family members and the general public to have such a treasured piece of history like this ship, in full working order and staffed by volunteers. The world should not forget what a Merchant Seaman gave to the war effort, or that they were not recognized as true "vets" until very recently. They were heroes, all of them. What an amazing story they have to tell, and what a true gift this Liberty Ship offers as a living bit of history, lovingly and skillfully maintained by people who know her true worth then AND now.

My father, LeRoy Lovstad, hometown of record Garwin, IA served as GM2 in the Atlantic theater on the armed freighters. His ship discharged it's soldiers at an invasion beachhead on D+1. He said the entire day before, the eastern horizon was afire with the invasion, and the channel filled with ships as far as the eye could see. During our one childhood vacation, at Seaside, OR. I saw his eyes suddenly fill with tears as we stood quietly before a freighter loaded with lumber. He said it was a Liberty Ship, just like those he sailed the Atlantic 13 times, all that was missing were the gun tubs. Lee W. Lovstad (lovstad@medscape.com)

My grandfather served in WWII on the SS Jeremiah O'Brien. I'm wondering if I might be able to find a register of sailors who served on the ship. His name was Eddie Clum. I still have a medallion with the O'Brien on one side, and a gunners mate on the other. He wore it until he died in 1997.
