Jewish Riga

Like most of Latvia, Riga once had a thriving Jewish life. After Cossack and Communist deportations, Nazi murders, and Soviet repression, very little survives.

As a Russian, I am truly sorry for the injustice and mistreatment of the Jews in the Russian history. Although certain Jews did work for the regime, their personal sins cannot justify what was done to this talented, intelligent ethnic group as a whole. I have deep respect for the culture and family values of your long-suffering people. I think I am in the minority, to be honest.

The Holocaust commenced in Russia with the 1880 Pogroms. This was robbery disguised as ethnic unrest. These regions were always anti-something, especially wealth, industry and self enterprise. The Holocaust was aimed at poor peasants, at people in shawls, at people whose presumed life style was exaggerated and based on untrue. The murder of the innocents by rabid SS beast. So sad, so wrong, such foolishness. Your photos show us what might have been.

Thank you for this wonderful record of life in Latvia. It includes many pictures of places we missed or didn't photograph on our 2003 trip.

Thank you very much for such a beautiful present. 2 or 3 years ago I visited Havana and was able to take pics from the Old Synagogue of "El Patronato" what a beautiful experience, again thank you for this amazing collection!

Thank you for this extraordinary set of images. As one who has lost Grandparents,aunts and Uncles thatI never met I find this a moving set of reminders of lost communities...And a police guard is still needed! Sad.
I too use the G-3 and D-100. The G-3 continues to amaze me with its consistent output.
