One of the first things we noticed in the Top End was the many termite mounds.
Most of the ones we came across are known as Cathedral Termite Mounds with some
being taller than buses. Personally I find it amazing that such small insects can build
such amazing structures.

In Litchfield National Park there is a section with a different type of termite mound
known as Magnetic Termite Mounds, they are flatter and look more like tombstones.
In the case of the Magnetic Termite Mounds they have thin edges pointing north
south, with the broad section east west to minimize exposure to the sun. This is
to keep the mounds cooler for the termites inside.
