On our trip to Europe we also visited the Kazimierz, which is a part of Krakow. But because it is so different in culture, history and architecture from the other Polan.nd, I put my pictures in a different gallery.
Kazimierz (Latin: Casimiria; Yiddish Kuzmir) is a historical district of Kraków (Poland), best known for being home to a Jewish community from the 14th century until the Second World War. The Kazimierz was the centre of Jewish culture in Eastern Europe.
As recently as the year 2000 much of Kazimierz was still in ruins, a crumbling shell of its former self.
I found some beautiful black and white pictures on the internet from Zbigniew Kosc, web address: http://members.chello.nl/zkosc/kazimierz It is very worthwhile to see his pictures taken in the 1980 of the Kamizierz.
Today, out of the blue, Kazimierz is undergoing a major renaissance. And you can see it everywhere. I liked the way the Jewish heritage of Krakow is now protected. And I found the ambiance very encouraging.
