Curtis Orotone

At least, after some research, we think it is a Curtis Orotone. I tried to get the tone
as close as possible. This photo doesn't show how great the foreground detail is.

One of John's favorite possessions, we found this about 20 years ago at a garage
sale. It's about 10"x13" and printed on glass. It was in a different frame, the back/emulsion was totally
exposed, we bought it for $3.00. I put a piece of glass over the back, but am not sure
how to properly conserve it.

Resized in PS.

Well, there it is. I've heard so much about it. Was it the only one you got? I thought there were a couple of them. It's scary how delicate it looks. Has it flaked any since you got it? I'd sooo keep it in a cool, dark place, after I took it to Sothebys for an apraisal. -ROB

Cheryl, It is a Curtis. A duplicate is found in a book titled "Portraits from North American Indian Life" The title of the picture is: The Storm - Apache. Hasn't John authenticated it with the dealer in Turlock, CA?

What a treasure. At least now it's preserved digitally. Print a copy and keep the original in a dark dry place.

Amazing find. Even in those early days of photography he knew how to render his subjects perfectly. This is fascinating, Cheryl.

Well, I won't be missing any more yard sales. :) This is great. Maybe ask an art restorer how to protect it?

I can imagine you taking this to Antiques Roadshow on PBS and finding out it's worth thousands...well, let's hope so!

$3.00 at a garage sale? For a Curtis? Even if it isn't a Curtis, it's a pretty cool photograph.
