Erlöserkirche...

"Erlöserkirche"
Bad Homburg´s "Hagia Sophia". Indeed, this Evangelical church is similar to Istanbul´s imposing construction in many ways. Its interior is decorated in the neo-Byzantine style: Its walls are richly decorated in marble; its ceilings are covered with gold mosaics. In contrast, the six-armed aureoled in the transept dome resembles that of San Marco in Venice, while Christ appears above the white marble altar as the "Lord of Heaven and Earth" just as in Revenna. The bejeweled altar cross was originally intended by Kaiserin Auguste-Viktoria for the "Erlöserchurch" in Jerusalem. She and Kaiser Wilhelm II assumed full responsibility, both conceptually and financially, for the building of the church. It was inaugurated in 1908, finally providing local Evangelical Christians an adequate space for their religious services. When residing in Bad Homburg, the Kaiser attended services here in his own imperial box with private entrance. The mighty, square towers of the "Erlöserkirche", along with those of the nearby St. Mary´s Catholic church and the "White Tower", define Bad Homberg´s skyline from a distance.
