The Barbary macaques on Gibraltar are the only free-ranging monkeys in Europe.
As they are a tailless species, they are also known locally as Barbary apes or rock apes, despite being monkeys (Macaca sylvanus).
Today the number of Barbary macaques on the Rock of Gibraltar totals about 230 to 300 individuals living in 6 groups with group sizes ranging between 25 and 70 animals.
