The birds of Africa are some of my favorite because I was able to live among them for 3 years in The Gambia, West Africa 1999-2002 and returned twice in 2009, thus Gambia is best-represented. There are over 400 species of birds there and I barely touched the surface with my photos. Of course I saw some I could not photograph. Then I made three trips to East Africa with two safaris in Kenya, another favorite place. My identifications come mainly from two books: "A Field Guide to Birds of The Gambia and Senegal" by Clive Barlow, Tim Wacher and Tony Disley and the "Collins Illustrated Birds of Eastern Africa" by Ber Van Perlo. When in doubt I double-check on the internet. All are African but I use the name "African" in the identification only when the books include in the official name. They are arranged alphabetically by their English names. The bold-faced name indicates a sub-gallery with multiple photos. I photographed these in Gambia, Senegal, Kenya, Tanzania and various zoos. Location is indicated under each enlarged bird photo. 70+ species! Enjoy!
