Pheasant Tailed Coucal - Centropus phasianinus

This is my "Photo of the Week" for the week ending 26th May 2011.

It was just after dawn and as the sun began to rise. This Coucal was perched out in the open on a Frangipani tree as it searched for prey. Suddenly the first golden light flooded on to the bird and brought out all detail. After a while the bird moved on to continue it's search. Pheasant-tailed Coucal are related to cuckoos but build their own nest and rear their own young. They are black-headed in the summer and have an eclipse plumage of browns in the winter.
