Crossing The River Don

The river Don lies about 60 miles west of Volgograd. Crossing it at this point is a real adventure as you can see from these photos'

The barge only crosses the river three times per day, towed by one craft and pushed by the other. The power crafts appear to be WWII amphibious trucks.

On the other side of the Don River is the Stanitsa Trehostrovskaya. Stanitsa is the Cossack term for a large village, used here, as is the custom in this area.

This was once a thriving collective farm during the Soviet era, but has fallen into disrepair and neglect. Most of the people that we met
were not originally from here, telling us that the former residents moved away for better jobs.
